Basalt is a aphanitic (fine-grained) igneous rock with generally 45–53% silica (SiO2) formed from the rapid cooling of magnesium-rich and iron-rich lava exposed at or very near the surface of. Basalt commonly features a very fine-grained matrix interspersed with visible mineral grains. Basalt lava has a low viscosity, due to its low silica content, resulting in rapid lava flows that can spread over great areas before cooling and solidification. basalt compositions are rich in MgO and CaO and low in SiO2 and the alkali oxides. Basalt applications are well known from roman age where this material was used in its natural form as a paving and building stone. Basalt is known for its excellent mechanical properties, resistance to moisture absorption, resistance to corrosive liquids and environments, durability in service and great versatility. A wide range of applications of basalt and its products include its uses in civil engineering, automotive, boat building, wind turbine blades, and sporting goods The nokansaz Basalt mine is located in south west of Tehran province with nearly 45 km far from Shams-Abad city. Basalt of this mine is extracted by open-pit mining. Processing of Basalt to meet customer specifications is as much of an art as it is a science.
